Language Arts Connection in Sketchbook Illustrations

Arts concepts are reinforced by illustrating written journal prompts in a sketchbook.  This type of assignment is one of the most creative and fascinating "Scholar-empowered" activities.  Scholars are given a general writing prompt and a companion arts concept (element/principle) as a problem to be solved in their sketchbook.  Recently, words from the National Spelling Bee (caravan, invertebrate) were creatively illustrated using an art element such as "Value" or a principle of design such as "Asymmetrical Balance."
