Balance as a Principle of Design

6th-7th Grade Scholars reviewed the principle of Balance as it is used by artists when designing a work of art.
The Japanese design concept using dark and light, Notan, was explored. Cut paper is often used to create Not an designs and scholars applied Balance to fascinating Notan creations.

Three basic types of Balance explored by scholars through Notan are:
Check out the Notans below and guess the type(s) of Balance used:
- Symmetrical Balance: both sides of the Line of Symmetry are generally the same, although they do not need to be exactly the same
- Asymmetrical Balance: both sides of the Line of Symmetry are different but equal (2 large circles=1 medium triangle + 3 small squares); interior design was used to reinforce this concept
- Radial Balance: all sides are essentially equal, around a radial center point
