Personal Portrait

Picture
Hannah includes her alter-ego
High School Visual Arts class created wonderful self-portrait paintings using water-based oil paints.  For several scholars, this was their first excursion into the challenging world of drawing the human face in proportion and then exploring oil painting.

After completing a drawing following proportions of the human face, scholars followed a few guidelines to create their self portrait:
  • Use geometry to place key design elements
  • One-half of the face realistic (local color not necessary)
  • At least 3 symbols of their heritage, culture, personal interests, future goals

Picture
Elizabeth's painting expresses a variety of interests
Picture
Madison included a rich variety of symbols.
Picture
Waylon's ever-present alter-ego (note the constellation).
Picture
Morgan paid homage to her heritage. Can you identify her use of Repetition as well?
Picture
Rachel's detailed painting of eyes is a fascinating example for the other scholars
Picture
Nathan was serious about creating "ginger" as a hair color--and symbol!
Picture
Ryan's symbols include an amazing wheel in place of an eye.
Picture
Ali imaginatively applied the principle of Repetition.
Picture
Melisa's expressive painting also features her heritage and culture.

Levi combined infused metal into his self-portrait.

Preparing Boards for Painting

Picture

Gesso was applied as a sealing medium to masonite boards.  Gesso is a white, chalky paint that can be applied smoothly or given a texture.

Scholars in the video below are adding the first of three layers of gesso in preparation for the artwork to be painted.
