Check out the 8th Grade Collage Project

We are studying how to address a theme in works of art using principles of Proportion and Contrast.  The theme we is "Preserving our Local Waterways."  When the artworks are complete, an exhibit is planned to be presented in the community.  Stay tuned to see how these amazing works develop!

Exploring how artists use math to create a sense of Harmony  is an important element in our learning activities.  We reviewed use of the Golden Section as a classic under-structure for works of art.  In the process, we have also addressed standards for math (using a compass to create intersecting lines).
Artists we studied who use math to design their works of art include:
  • Leonardo Da Vinci
  • Edgar Degas
  • Joseph Mallord William Turner
  • Giorgio Morandi

Students emphasized the dimensions of their artwork such as half-way points/divisions and also the square within the rectangle they used.

This time-honored approach organizes the work, providing a sense of structure, proportion and harmony: parts relate to each other and also to the work as a whole.

These amazing collages feature our closest waterway, Dry Creek, one block north of the school as well as the plants and animals living in the Roseville area.  Subjects in our drawings and paintings highlight endangered species native to the waterway.

Dry Creek has been designated as a protected habitat for the Central Valley Steelhead trout.  Our 8th grade scholars created a mural featuring this beautiful fish.  For videos and photos of students working on the mural visit:
