Scholars Explore Historical Events Through Theatre

Picture
Periods 2, 3, 5 and 6 write, produce and perform short plays about an event from history they studied this year.
The productions are in preparation for Open House as well as additional art projects and presentations to younger classes.

Period 2 Productions:
--"From Death Comes Life" production highlights the negative and subsequent benefits of Europe's Bubonic Plague, or Black Death and features the classic poem, "Ring Around the Rosy.
--"Life is Sweet!" referencing "Mercedes and the Chocolate Pilot" about the pilot, Gail Halvorsen, who found a way to bring smiles to the children of war-torn Berlin.  As he was delivering goods to Berlin during Stalin's blockade after WWII, he noticed children watching the airplanes land and decided to drop candy to them, using little parachutes.

Period 3 Productions:  Teams prepare reader's theater productions from the Br'er Rabbit tale of his encounter with a Tar Baby.  The reader's theatre plays will also be presented to elementary scholars.

Period 5 Production: Scholars used their imagination to combine the Pavan (A Renaissance Dance) and the Big Bang Theory building on ideas from Shakespeare's play, "A Midsummer Night's Dream."

6th Period Productions

Using actual letters discovered in a Cottage Grove, Oregon museum, scholars relate the tale of a young bride sailing to America on the Titanic.  Her fiancé traveled by train from Oregon to meet and marry her in New York.  She survived, but her wedding dress and all her luggage was lost.  Members of a church helped the couple by providing a wedding dress, funds for replacing her lost clothes and traveling costs.  The title of this production is, "Rainbows and Icebergs."
The video below shows scholars preparing the dance scene that takes place after the wedding.  Scholars used the dance they learned in Greek class as a celebration of the touching story.

"Potato Basket"

Another group of scholars in Per. 6 examines the  origin and impact of the Irish Potato Famine through their production, "Potato Basket."  Scholars enjoyed creating props for their performance.
