Geometry Provides Harmony/Unity in JAA Works of Art

Picture
JAA scholars enjoyed discovering how to create a sense of Harmony and Unity in their artwork.  Harmony is created when individual elements relate to each other and Unity happens when the separate elements also relate to the work of art as a whole.

For thousands of years, artists, architects and designers have developed their works using mathematical relationships.  Our scholars are learning that the most interesting designs combine order and variety.  Brain waves are stimulated by the combination of both order and variety.  Research indicates that brain waves flatten with too much order (boring) or too much variety (confusion).  Math provides the sense of order and JAA scholars are demonstrating how the potential for variety (creativity) is endless.

The first step is drawing a square.  Then the square can be divided and specific elements emphasized.  A High School Visual Arts standard focuses on creating Dominance and Subordination.  Using contrasting values, scholars emphasized areas of their Starcut design (below).

Use of a Compass & Ruler

Picture
In order to create equal segments around a circle, scholars first place a mark on the radius of a circle.
Then the compass is placed on that mark.  Using the radius measurement, another mark is made where the compass intersects the circle.  This process is continued around the circle.  Lines are drawn connecting the intersecting points.

Endless Possibilities for Creativity!!

In addition to the Starcut, rosette and circle division designs, scholars  drew the Golden Rectangle.  They also learned how this figure, first identified in nature, has been applied to create designs throughout the world for thousands of years.
