Exploring Value/Contrast Using Charcoal

In preparation for our Book of Hours project, 9th-10th grade students created "additive and subtractive" art using a variety of values in the medium of charcoal. At first, students were hesitant to use such a messy medium but not for long! Once everyone realized how quickly they could create beautiful marks, their lines became more expressive and abstract.
Very wild and crazy--and very informative!!

9th/10th Grade Scholars Create Books for
1st Grade Students

Students in the 9th/10th Grade Fine Arts class used math to create and assemble books for 1st Grade scholars. After studying bookbinding and also how artists use math to create a sense of harmony, students applied what they learned to design book covers for a reader's theater play, "Sounds of Spring," written by Mrs. Jensen.
Students used a variety of materials to create their book covers.
The "signature" (inside papers of a book) was then attached to the covers with colored thread or string.
To discover how a scholar used math in the books below, look for a square!
The 9th/10th grade students will present the books to the 1st Grade students. Each 1st Grade student will be given a copy of the play and small groups, lead by a 9th Grade student will read the play together.
An exhibition of the books is planned to be displayed on campus.
This project is in preparation for a special "Book of Hours" that each student will create featuring significant items, events and impressions from their individual lives.

Mini Sculptures

Scholars are continuing our exploration of art in 3 Dimensions by creating mini sculptures. These sculptures will be an expression of how a scholar's personal gift (kindness, curiosity, writing, etc.) could address a social issue (poverty, hunger, pollution, etc.)
The first step is to construct the armature (framework inside the sculpture) using styrofoam and tape.
The armatures will then be covered with plaster fabric.
9th/10th scholars face the challenge head-on:
